Except the unions are where it all started, going back to the Chartist uprising in the UK during 1839. Trade unions were at the root of the communist movements in every nation, especially in the old Soviet Union in 1917. In the US, it's well known about their ties to the Longshoreman, etc.: "Persons associated with the CP did, in fact, exercise a good deal of influence in a number of CIO unions in the 1940s, both in the leadership of unions such as the ILWU, UE, Transport Workers Union of America and Fur and Leather Workers and in staff positions in a number of other unions." It's still there, today.
