  1. There was a tale about a black spectral dog, with red glowing eyes, in Britain pre-WWI. In northern England, it was known as “Padfoot,” which became popular with the Harry Potter books. Another name for it was the Black Shuck. From this, if someone spotted a black dog at night, and their lantern lighted its eyes, I could imagine this myth quickly taking root among the superstitious in the trenches.
