There have been several nations “shocked” at the audacity of the United States since the nation was formed. “To the shores of Tripoli.”
What many young people do not understand is, the US began passing laws to stop slavery as the ink was still drying on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. What later led to the Civil War was Congress refusing to reimburse the planters, as England did, for their investment in their slaves, which would bankrupt many plantations. The American planters would have freed them, if they had been reimbursed as England did with their planters.
I have seen a receipt from the early 1800s, for a slave costing $500, which, in today's money, is over $17,000. The planters went into debt to buy them, borrowing money from the textile mills in NYC and elsewhere. Add that to the high tariffs being laid, and secession followed.
