The US is separated between idealists and realists. The left is made up of idealists and has been since the founding of the nation with certain protestant religions. (Jefferson, though, as an example, was a realist and Aristotelian).
By the late 1800s, the Christian Socialists around Boston (Church of the Carpenter and the Karl Marx School) started pushing socialism within the church, and they were the first to bring social science to New York, and to a handful of colleges where it spread. Columbia U was the main school where that started under the Episcopalians. Their first social science school (Rand) was where Trotsky settled and lectured before he left on a steamer to join Lenin at Saint Petersburg. They sat back and waited for the fight to start between the left and right of "Lincolnian America," and waited for a time to take over, as they started infiltrating the wealthy elite class.
Lincolnian America is the Leviathan spoken of by Hobbes and that was what Hamilton's Federalists wanted from the start, which is what Jefferson and Madison warned about. It was corrupt British mercantilism in the North East, which they renamed the American System. This was mostly kept under heel until the Civil War, where it was finally brought in by Lincoln and the Radical Republicans, who were really Federalists. The Democrat Party was changed via reconstruction, and that led to the Bourbon Democrats that gave us Wilson. They were also pro-big business and banking at the end. Under Wilson came the Fed and income tax, and the Leviathan now controlled both parties. This is what the socialists helped to finally subvert and create a conflict within hoping to take over after the collapse.
Hanson is correct, in that the problem is in the wealthy elite and even the upper-middle-class. They look at the rest of the middle-class as uneducated deplorables, and the lower class even worse, but as a useful tool.
