I think that they obtained their ideas about how to lie from us Yanks. Here, they make the claim that it was only a certain ethnicity that worked the large farm's fields, but in fact, all the way to just after the 20th century, both white and black worked the large farms, especially for sugar production.
They never speak about this, but sugar has two sources, cane and beets. The cane is grown in the south, but back then, the beets were mainly grown in the north. Blacks mainly cut the cane with machetes, while the whites squatted down, thinned, pulled, and chopped beets all day. Both groups had straw bosses standing behind them and watching as well. You always hear about the first group, but never the second.
