  1. It started when the change was made from using the DSM II (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) to the DSM III. It's been a downhill slide since.

  2. Most of that came with the release of Dr. Spock's book: Baby and Child Care, just after WWII. My mother had a copy, but thankfully, she never used any of his methods, and I was born twenty years after the end of WWII.   3.  @ceilie1  Yup. When I saw how protests outside the APA could lead to a disorder being magically removed from the manual, and cured with a mere vote of the board, I've not taken the manual seriously since then. Just think of how many new diagnoses have been developed since the DSM II. They had to increase their patient load for more profit somehow.
