I'm sure, Simon, that most people who come here are well read, and that they have found the same things that you have, whether they agree or not. I, myself, know of some obscure history, which originates from academic books that contain once classified government documents, etc, or documents that most of the public ignores, from supranational bodies, which are open source, but that is about it.
Saying that, Rhodes image is being attacked by the far left, as to them, he is the epitome of both imperialism, and capitalism. To me, it's childish, and unhinged behavior, to attack a statue, but that has been going on for thousands of years, as well as their violence.
The majority, whom are non-radicalized, or, as Dr. Robert Jay Lifton put it, non-thought controlled, simply shrug their shoulders when they notice a statue of say Marx, or Lenin, and go on about their business. There's a huge difference between the mentality of the two groups.
It might pay young students to read Dr. Lifton's book: Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, in these days and times.
