Labour, just like the D Party in the US, was taken over by radical elements starting around, or just before, WWII, and their grip became a stranglehold by the nineties. I'm sure everyone remembers how friendly FDR was with Stalin, even barring Churchill from a meeting between the two when in Tehran. It was so bad, that the Trotskyites fled the D Party, and joined the Rs, which became the Neocon element. That started the downfall of staunch conservatism in the R Party, and I'd bet a similar thing happened with the Tories.
