Let's define an internationalist correctly, and call them an international socialist. That was what Trotsky and his ilk were as well. They also claimed they were anti-communists because they hated Stalin, though they believed in spreading socialism internationally.
Trotsky hated Stalin because Stalin wasn't moving, at the time, to spread it worldwide, Trotsky thought. Both Lenin and Trotsky had plans on spreading it internationally, which was why Trotsky was in NYC during the same timeframe as Ho Chi Minh. Both were in NYC stirring the pot after the first social science school was formed in the Big Apple.
"Internationalism has several interpretations and meanings, but is usually characterized by opposition to nationalism and isolationism; support for international institutions, such as the United Nations; and a cosmopolitan outlook that promotes and respects other cultures and customs."
"One of the first international organisations in the world was the International Workingmen's Association, formed in London in 1864 by working class socialist and communist political activists (including Karl Marx). Referred to as the First International, the organization was dedicated to the advancement of working class political interests across national boundaries." -- Internationalism (politics) at Wiki
