It goes a bit farther, Simon, here in the States. They're some who would like the Federal Gov. to carve out several southern states, and create for them their own segregated nation. They have went completely overboard, and it reminds one an awful lot of a cult, or, as you say, some isolationist religious sects.

@vordman It would revert the land and infrastructure back to look like one of the old colonial territories of today, which were once held by the UK, or France, etc. Everything would fall apart and degrade. Every nation that the UK once controlled went to pot, because after they left, nothing was kept up or upgraded. Their heads of state became tyrants or warlords, who also became rich, while their nations fell apart. The same thing happened with the US and Liberia. Take a look at some of the photos from there. That occurred over China and Russia's encroachment.
