There are always a handful of zealots in every religion, which will act in these ways, but when one looks at history, one finds that either a nation's government, or group of allied governments, were behind their actions. In other words, the zealots are made into pawns. As far as the religion in mention, look into Germany and her allies going back to 1900. That has been thoroughly documented. There are also zealots recruited by the opposing side, to pit against the original belligerents.
