The "great melting pot" was always a great lie, as hardly any immigrants fully assimilated after they arrived. The US has pretty much had ghettos segregated by cultural differences since its founding.
When the Italians came, they settled close to each other, which led to the Black Hand racket becoming widespread in their areas, and the Russian Jews also settled together creating Little Odessa in Brooklyn, where signage is in Russian today. The Irish, also, had their own neighborhoods. It's that way with the Muslims, Blacks, Hispanics, and others as well.
