The truth of the matter about the banking community is, that it was always needed by the ruling class and farming community, but once the ruling class borrowed more than they could ever repay, without raising taxes to an exorbitant amount, the bankers were persecuted, and killed off by the same ruling class, while wild tales were concocted for the reasons why. The conspiracy theories are that old, and many lies were concocted by the ruling elite. It started with the Knights Templar, who had become the royal bankers by safeguarding the pilgrim's money between the West and the Levant, by using deposit, and using a bill of credit when they reached their destination, where they reclaimed their coin. That idea came from China. The goldsmiths and Lombardy bankers were also persecuted in the same manner, when the ruling elite over-borrowed. This is not to say that there weren't loan sharks back then, which had interest rates ranging from 30% to 200%, but there were hardly any laws that set the rates. Finally, the RCC stepped in, again, and founded a bank called the Monte di Pietà, at Malta in 1598, which regulated the interest. This bank, and order, had taken the place of the Templars.
