They barely work in the subtropics (most of the US), and on the coldest days, emergency heat must be used. The UK is in the temperate zone, and is colder, similar to New England and Canada. More emergency heat, a bigger power grid needed.

The great UK property grab is here.

@theclotshotdidit3115 It's according to the type of heat pump. Some use underground piping that extracts the heat from the ground instead of the outside air. I'm not sure what they use there. At that, the earth runs at about 45-50F at a certain depth, which would be below the frost line in the north. In the subtropics, this type is used to cool in certain systems, simply by circulating the water from the piping loops through a coil. I wouldn't call 50F warm, though, but it's better than freezing. Electric auxiliary heat would be used to bring that on up. The axillary heat would be an electric heating coil to bring that temp on up, similar to one in a hot water heater for those that replace boilers. However, below 35F, it would be heating solely with that electric coil if it extracts heat from the outside air.

"Auxiliary heat is a secondary heating function your thermostat automatically switches to when it’s too cold outside for your heat pump to extract warmth from the air (below 35F or 1.66C). This type of heating is often triggered when the outdoor temperature drops to near or below-freezing temperatures." How many days are below 1.66C in the UK? I know many who switch to emergency heat as they state that the auxiliary heat that kicks in to help isn't warm enough.
