If I recall, wasn't there a battle, where the Portuguese took a fortification in Morocco, where they took on slaves before they ever had the idea about plantations, and before they founded Madeira? It was only later, on Madeira and São Tomé, where the Portuguese developed the plantation, and where its idea was then exported across the Atlantic. That was mainly over Spain noticing the Portuguese's success, which led to an argument where the Pope divided the Atlantic between the two. Both Portugal and Spain knew of the slavery in Northern Africa before that battle took place. I'm not sure how many other nations did, but it would have to had to be any who had ships sailing to the Med.
