Colonialism was about one thing, making a huge profit via the new corporations being sent to those areas for products not available within the homeland. That changed into globalization and internationalism, where the corporations decided to just invest in other nations without trying to control the populations via direct government. It's as broad as it is long to be honest, and it's still about money.

@wreython Nations are always looking at ways to grow the GDP with trade, even back then. That was when the corporation came to be, in Britain, where the corporations were sent out to other lands to profit, but they were only copying Spain and Portugal, which had already begun doing it. In reality, it's even older than that, and it's always been about exploiting other lands for increasing wealth, and gaining strategic holdings.
