  1. There were supposed to be convict or penal (felonies and war prisoners) colonies in the southern US as well. It is estimated that 25% of those that left Britain were convicts (Ekirch, A. Roger (1987), Bound For America: The Transportation of British Convicts to the Colonies, 1718–1775, Oxford University Press). For instance, the state of Georgia was to be used as a debtors prison colony. The majority, though, went to the Caribbean.
