Why were the contents of the First Amendment to the US Constitution placed first in order? It opens with protecting religion, since religion relies upon free speech, and then it protects freedom of speech and the press. Last, it protects the right to peacefully assemble, which is what should occur at any church or town square. Protecting the press meant protecting the publishing of any holy book, and any other literature after that. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Liberty was why the First Amendment reads as it does.
