It started with the progressives (federalists or nationalists) after 1900, which led to the League of Nations, though by WWII, it had collapsed. They didn't stop there, though, as the World Federalist Movement, which was founded, supposedly, by two socialist feminists and suffragettes, rapidly grew in size, and they demanded that the UN be formed, and that it must have more teeth than the old League. One of them went on to become very important in forming the EU.
When you read their Montreux Declaration (23 August 1947), it's all about a world government, as well as forcing every person in the world under one international court of law, and they want a military to enforce it. You would have no safe nation to turn to for asylum, and you could be extradited, and prosecuted in a foreign court.
Several nations have done their best to block them, and their progressive friends in the UN, but they're gaining ground. Federalism is nationalism, and this is a collectivizing and centralizing world nationalism on steroids. The old nation states would become something similar to counties or shires under the UN. This is what many globalists really want.
