Do you remember Reagan standing before the UN, and speaking about how an extraterrestrial threat could cause all the nations to "work together?" Before that were the Hippies and Greenpeace, along with every other nutter one could think of, who graduated, and became politicos. Others became economists thinking the same things.
Back in 1968, a group led by Alexander King decided something similar, that we needed a common enemy to "unite the nations." They produced a few books, and in one of them, titled: The First Global Revolution, they stated: "new enemies must be identified."
"In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill...All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then is humanity itself."
