In the early twentieth century, the last of the surviving slaves in the US were interviewed, and their stories were recorded. I've always had to ask this question: why did some wish for the slave days back? Answer: no extra responsibilities. Housing and clothing were provided, as well as food. After the fact, they had to survive on their own, like everyone else.
