In this case, we Americans were buying solid brass doorknobs, turned on lathes, from the British long before this guy obtained a patent for a device to not allow a door to slam shut with the wind. The patent wasn't about a doorknob, but what was connected to it. It was an improvement on something already invented, but, of course, most from that group would be lucky to have even read it.
"Oh, look, dare's a doorknob, he's enn-vented et!"
