I opened a savings account at a US bank, without showing any ID, as a kid in the seventies. Times were different then, but they had already started to change with the hippies, war protesters, and other movements. It's been a downhill slide ever since, and it all came from the universities; those thinking that they knew better than others, who want to micromanage everyone else.
