There was the story about the first experimental plantation between the Portuguese and an African king, and it was around Ghana, I believe, which became the model for the plantations in the Americas. The fact is, the US only took 5% of the slaves, and they came up from the Caribbean, where slavery had been used for a good many years beforehand. There's a lot of fallacies told about slavery in the US, such as all the plantations in the southern states used slaves, when, in fact, only about a quarter of them did. The story of Atlanta during the Civil War is very revealing too.
