Anti-slavery propaganda was a product of the Federalists, who eventually became the GOP under Lincoln. That's where the northern attitude originated that they were, somehow, smarter and better than southerners. That myth still exists today.
What many claim was hardship, the work of farming and harvesting crops, was not limited to the slaves. In the north were crops such as harvesting sugar beets, which was more backbreaking than cutting cane, and that was done by white people. In the plains was wheat, etc., also harvested by white people.
There might have been a few bad slaveholders, but most of the plantation owners were well-educated, better than the northerners, and were religious. Stating this, how do you think they would have treated their slaves, which they had a huge investment in?
