I think it more about him trying to protect his true political affiliation than his religion. There is a group, in the Middle East, that are far to the left, and if I named them, this comment would quickly vanish. The Batthists were connected to this movement, and they were very cozy with the old Soviet Union, and today, it's the Far East.
