Sadly, the same caliber of people behind this today, are similar to those such as Dr. Nott from Alabama during the Civil War days in America, (who was trained in Paris), and later, the organizers that infiltrated the civil rights movement, and promoted the use of violent action by the NAACP. In the US, much of this originated from the left wing in New York starting in the late 19th century, and they were the socialists who promoted the nasty "E word." They were followers of Trotsky and Marx. Trotsky's followers even backed the NSDAP, because they were against Stalin, who Trotsky despised. They were known as the New York Intellectuals.
That movement was thick in Germany as well, and it led to the communists and Hitler's rise, as well as fascism's in Italy. France was a hotbed for it too, (having been since the French Revolution), and there were some within the UK such as Chamberlain, who wrote the book: The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century, which Hitler enjoyed.
