It was the result of the Westphalian system created after 1648, and the expansion, exploitation, and imperialism in the west afterwards. Then, it became all about trade, where each new state gradually started to change.
By the late 1700s, it was all about competition between the western states, and the exploitation of lands outside their home nations. In the US, Federalism was built around this and Hobbes' philosophy. It was kept down as much as possible by the Jeffersonians, but after the War of 1812, the old Federalists started gaining ground under Clay in 1815, who's policies and ideology later led to the nullifications, secession, and Civil War in 1861 just forty-six years later. There was almost a war during Jackson over this.
After 1865, political corruption grew by leaps and bounds within the Anglo-American Establishment, which is led by the monied in both the northern US states, and London. In the US, they're known as WASPs. This cabal has grown until we have what we have today, where corruption in politics is rampant. Two world wars greatly helped that out, creating the revolving doors with contractors and NGOs in both nations. The corrupt Grant administration, and the Radical Republicans are a good example of what was to come.
After WWII, those entering politics did it for one thing, which was to enrich themselves while they had the power. In the US, it's why many retain their security clearances after leaving office. Later employment, and insider trading.
