Do the "republicans" think that having a president will cost them any less? In the US, the President isn't paid that much, but the office requires a budget in the millions every year. Think of all the WH staffers, the help, and the Secret Service on top of transportation, etc.

@joelc9439 That's the point I'm making. There's no difference. The main thing that I've heard complaints about, is the family receiving about £6 million per year.

@neilgayleard3842 Yes, but a political party selects the PM, which is not what you'd want, I think. You don't have to select a monarch every four years, but if some wants a president, and to keep it democratic, then you have to vote for them. You're not going to save any money over that.
