Those that wish to dodge this question generally have something to hide. Everyone that I speak to in the US asks that same question of everyone they meet, and it's always politely answered. It's only when you live in or visit larger cities where some people take this as something other because of their pasts. If they do not wish to assimilate, and fit in with our culture, then nobody is stopping them from leaving.
