And guess who easily got the best automobiles. If you put your name on a list, in twenty years, you might get the okay to buy one with something similar to a lawnmower engine, if you could afford it. Most everyone was stuck with public conveyance, unless you were a “party member”.

@HuHWhat-yi8cp Oh, yes, I know about that. Many of those dumps (apartments) housed two families, instead of one, as well. They used to hang a sheet as a curtain to divide the living area, to have a small semblance of privacy.

@stephencope7178 The exhaust was what kept you warm during the cold winters. 😁 That, and several of your neighbors that were taxiing along with you. They used to show them in the old spy movies and programs, and they always seemed to be painted the same color. I don't imagine that they came in too many colors. However, that was better than walking, or riding a cart pulled by a broken-down pony.
