If you ever have time to pursue them, read all the volumes of the Golden Bough, by the Scottish anthropologist, Sir James George Frazer, though the abridged version has the most important aspects within it. I have read through these twelve volumes a few times and found them to be most interesting, especially Diana and the King of the Woods in ancient Italy during the days of Caligula.
