The truth behind the papal bull against Freemasonry was over Protestantism. At the time, a person of any religion could join, but the majority of Freemasons were Protestants. The pope did not want Catholics to pick up on the protestant ideology and switch religions, so the pope not only lied about Freemasonry in the bull, but admits to basing it on nothing but rumor and speculation. In 1738, the fraternity of Freemasonry was only 21 years old, and it's membership, especially in the UK, was most all protestant, and this was still during the enlightenment, which was siding against state religion. Freemasonry was for the freedom of speech, the press, freedom of religion, democracy and natural rights, and was against state religion and the divine rights of kings. This went against everything that the Catholic church and the monarchies were for. The UK had just had their Glorious Revolution, and this ban, along with the reformation, helped lead to the revolutions in the US, France, and Italy. Before, the church ran the monarchs and states, and after the revolutions, the people ran the states.
