The Federalists weren't about to allow the sovereign southern states to secede and lose the tariff money and agriculture they generated. Two books to read: Lincoln Unmasked The Real Lincoln That is the truth they don't want you to know, and both books were written by a Ph.D. in economics, who researched the real history leading to the war.
