Russia is not going to abandon Syria, when the political party of Assad, the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which is one of the ten communist parties within the National Progressive Front, is running Syria. Syria, Leabonon, Iraq, and others all have the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and the NPF, running their countries. Nobody seems to look at the politics of the Islamic leaders in the Middle-East. Russia has been in bed with, and arming these Middle-Eastern countries, since WWII. The Communist Party is a long way from being dead. Doesn't anyone wonder why the Democratic Party, Obama, and the Clintons are so cozy with them? Their politics match.
