When you understand that socialism was first pushed in the US by a few Protestant churches, then yes, you know it's a cult. They were known as Christian Socialists, and they were within several denominations, especially the Episcopalians, which led to the creation of the Rand School of Social Science in NYC later on. The Church of the Carpenter in Boston, which was founded in 1890, was one of them. Wiki has a couple of articles about them, with one being "Christian Socialism," and the other "Category: American Christian Socialists."
