Progressivism is destroying the nation, and it started under Roosevelt, when he was with the Navy, and pulling the strings. It led to war in the Philippines, first, and then against the Spanish in Cuba, where they and the press were pushing for both, even though McKinley was anti-war and trying to stop what the press was ginning up with the progressives. After this, starting in 1910 -12, the GOP began booting the progressives out, but they invaded again during and after WWII, so we have what we have today.
