It's been that way since the founding, with two political philosophies. We have Jeffersonian Republicanism, which leads to freedom, and Hamiltonian Federalism, which leads to big brother government. Guess which philosophy became that of the Whig Party, and later the GOP? After the Civil War, we were stuck with big brother governance from the north, and they had already started dabbling with socialism, which goes hand in hand along with big brother, and it became progressivism.
