  1. Since the Civil War, New York has been trending toward the hard-left. Horace Greeley hired Karl Marx as his British correspondent, and happily published Marx's screeds in his newspaper. The left-wing elite at Tammany Hall loved that, and it only grew worse as the turn of the century grew closer.
