Boslhevism Happened: Classical liberalism, (that of John Locke), has nothing to do with what is taking place within the Democratic Party today, as that's not liberalism. The term, liberal, today, when compared to classical liberalism, is nowhere close. The closest thing, today, to classical liberalism, is true conservative Republicanism, not that of the neoconservatives and the left.
Classical liberalism is the theory of natural rights. Freedom of speech and the press, freedom of religion, a right to keep and bear arms, to be protected from illegal search and seizure, a right to a trial by jury, etc. Today's liberalism definition, equates to people who believe in cultural Marxism or communism, who want a totalitarian state, believe in socialist welfare, have a hatred of natural rights, (when it is against them, such as free speech), and hate capitalism. They're completely different in ideology. They're actually Marxists.
The Democrats haven't really practiced classical liberalism since Woodrow Wilson, and especially since the years of FDR. There were even hints of the Democrats being against classical liberalism, with Thomas Jefferson, which is one of the reasons behind the formation of the Republican Party, out of the Whigs, later on. Manifest destiny, (which runs counter to classical liberalism), was one of the main things that the Republicans were against, and were formed over, along with the actions resulting from Jackson, over the emerging middle-class. Slavery was another. From the time of Jefferson, the Democrats slowly grew against classical liberalism.
