Of course, they liked it, but that doesn't negate the fact that dirty water would make you sick, or kill you. The Thames, at one time, was an open cesspool, and the tributaries weren't much better. Animal waste, including human's, had to go somewhere. Beer and wine is ancient for this very reason.
