In April 1897, Leo Taxil (his pen name), an anti-cleric and anti-mason, confessed to a 12 year long hoax, which said that Freemasonry worshiped Satan, and that Albert Pike spoke with lucifer, at 3:00 every evening. He did it to mock Freemasonry and the Catholic Church. A friend of Taxil's, A C de la Rive, had written a book based on Taxil's hoax, and admitted none of it was true. They are still both quoted by conspiracists and religious zealots today. The hoax is known as the 'lie that will not die'. Taxil Hoax: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxil_hoax
