  1. I would recommend one of the cheap handheld scope-meters if just learning electronics. It will do anything in the audio range, and some of these meters have a function generator built in. A student wouldn't have to spend much, and audio is where one should start learning circuits after doing logic. That would give you the money to buy a decent breadboard without breaking the bank.
