  2. In reality, what became the founding of the GOP, was the resurrection of the old big-government Federalists, now calling themselves Whigs, under Henry Clay. The same Clay that dueled John Randolph over the very differences between the real Old Republicans of Randolph, and Clay's Federalist Whigs. I always found it deplorable, how Clay, their new party, and Lincoln stole the word, Republican, from the actual real Republicans that, one could say, ended with Randolph and Jackson.
