  1. You're forgetting about the contribution of the Templars, in not only banking and money, but it's huge shipping and trade conglomerate that was spread over several Western European states. That gave Western Europe a leg up over every other nation just a few hundred years later. Funny, too, that the last of them not only settled in but were protected by, Portugal.
