Bacchanalia (swingers) parties. They have them everywhere, but some are invite-only for the elite. That's where the idea of the masks originates. Kubrick obtained the idea for this movie from an older story, Traumnovelle, which was about an elite Bacchanalia party ages ago.

@MrReubenTishkoff Oh, they have a private party-club, with masks, just for this, or did in LA. There was another close to NYC that was held in a mansion. You had to pay an expensive entrance fee to join the fun. The one in LA was big-time people. Another, is held in Venice. I saw a video from it where nude women walked around with lampshades on their heads. Really weird. Venice is where it's still really popular.
