Let's not forget, that many conspiracy theories are based on rumor, speculation, and outright lies. The Taxil Hoax is one good example of a long running, 12 year lie, from the 1890s, that was perpetrated against the Catholic church and Freemasonry, by a pissed off anti-cleric and pornographer. Then, there are the churches, themselves, along with governments, who have concocted many lies, to suit their agenda. It is generally the weak minded literalists, who are the gullible, and fall for hoaxes, scams, and fake conspiracy theories.
There have been several, peer reviewed, scientific studies made, by psychiatrists and psychologists, that show that those who believe in more than one conspiracy theory, have some form of mental illness; mainly a paranoid personality disorder.
