What happened to the west is very simple, since it has been building up since the commons were enclosed, and that is jealousy; plain and simple. Some of the public has hated the accumulation of wealth and the merchant class since it started. A good example of this is Marx, later on, where he hid his antisemitism with other words, such as using "capitalist" to hide the name of his own people, because he blamed them for capitalism, though he was dead wrong.
Racism is another word, which they have tried to use to hide their bigotry, jealousy, envy, and hatred behind. They use it in place of capitalist, now, to hide what they truly think, just like Marx did, earlier. Using pejorative stereotyping is one of the major methods of a propagandist. They try to use your emotions to change your mind, since they have no objective truth and fact to back them up.
