  1. To stop the nuclear arms race, we can thank Reagan, and those he brought in with them, for coming up with the idea of how to end it. The myth is that the US outspent the USSR, and that is not entirely correct. I just watched an interview with two people from the Reagan administration, who explained how it was done. When they took over the government, they did a study on the USSR, where they found that the Soviet state was around $95 billion in debt, and might not be able to make its payments. They also noted what made the state the most income. First, the Reagan administration went to the Saudis, and had them to drop the price of oil drastically. Next, they were to flood the market. It was estimated that the USSR made approximately 60% of its income from oil and gas. Oil dropped from $140 per barrel, to $40. They said that each dollar cost the USSR $1 billion. Next, Reagan's people went to the lenders, and warned them that the USSR might not meet their payments, a default, which caused the banks to cut the USSR off. When they couldn't make payment, the USSR was officially bankrupt, and collapsed. That was what really happened, which stopped the arms race.
