The rent is companies paying Amazon to hosts their website and cloud services. Digital land makes sense in that way. Just like it's too pricey and difficult for a workers to buy machines and start a factory under capitalism, it's also too expensive for a small business to build their own server and maintain their own infastructure, so renting it is.
